Whether you are embarking on a detox diet or simply want to lighten up your diet prior to a juice fast, there are five foods that you should avoid. A detox diet should help facilitate the removal of waste out of the body. To accomplish this, we must decrease our intake of congesting foods (foods that lead to stagnation) and increase our intake of the least congesting foods (foods that promote detoxification).
Here are 5 foods that you should stay clear of during your detox:
1) Breads/Baked goods, 2) Refined Sugar
Breads/baked goods and refined sugar increase acidity in the body, are pro-inflammatory, mucous forming and feed Candida.
3) Fried Foods
Fried foods are dehydrating, acidifying, pro-inflammatory, toxic to the liver and promote free radical formation.
4) Meat, 5) Milk Products
Meat and milk products, especially when non-organic or grass-fed, contain antibiotics, pesticides and toxins. They are also more likely to cause inflammation and increase acidity in the body. Both are mucous forming, difficult to digest and milk products feed Candida.
Here’s a helpful list that can help you incorporate more foods that promote detoxification and eliminate as many congesting foods as possible for the period of the detox:
Most congesting (More potentially toxic)
Least congesting (More detoxifying)
Just how strict should you be with your detox diet? In reality, a small slip up or two during the 2-4 week period you are detoxing probably won’t kill the detox. However, it can be a slippery slope and you may find yourself allowing too many congesting foods work their way into your detox diet. If you cheat a little, it’s okay; you’re human. Dust yourself off and remind yourself why you are cleansing in the first place and try visualizing just how light and energized you will feel by the end of it!
